Here are some updates and a list of events I will be attending this Fall. I would love to see you at them all ;) but I know we are all pretty busy. If you can make it to one or two, come on by and say hello!

Event Schedule:

The event is 21+. It's for up and coming fashion designers, artists, singers, bands, etc to show their work for one night only. The site shows the other artists and participants.

If any of you are interested in going or if you are unable to make it but would like to show support, tickets can be bought from the website.

Be sure to buy under my studio name, SKOP. Paypal is NOT needed in order to purchase tickets.

Tickets are only $10.

RAW will let me showcase at another out of state event/location if I sell at least <strike>20</strike> 16 tickets! This is a great opportunity for me to get my work out there.

I greatly appreciate all your support.

Been busy in the studio working on some portraits.

Will be writing a longer better post by the end of the week.

See you then <3Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-26006050584428376852012-05-04T08:42:00.000-07:002012-05-04T08:42:44.535-07:00Silicon Valley Open StudiosWow.

This is what happens when the craziness that is my life takes over. Long story short: House hunting, found a house, played please take our money and accept the paperwork already with the lender for a while, got the house, contractor work, major sadness and heartbreaking loss in the family that felt like a suckerpunch to the gut (still tearing up here), and finally move in.

The only painting I have done in the past 2 months has been on my house. Not on canvas :( Which hits a HUGE sour note. I have been itching to get back to painting but by the time the work day is done, I am back at home working well into the night on house stuff, the last thing I want to do is fight traffic back to my studio.

Not complaining about buying a home. ;) It's just time consuming. Haha.

Anyways, I wanted to let you know that I am here.

And, if you are still here (THANK YOU!!!), here is some news:
. . . . it's about time I post this.

I have a feeling this is going to be a good year. 2012 is the year of change, and thinking positivly, it's going to be good change. If I think about the possible negatives, I would just want to curl up in a ball and cry.

So this it going to be a fabulous year!

I feel very motivated in a lot of places in my life. In my creative zone especially. I have my lists going for paintings, I have my outline built up for my next two books and I am currently editing (again) my novel. I am sending it out to agents by the end of February.

I love the idea of having a deadline. It gives me time to think and work towards and finish. I realized, that if I don't have a deadline, nothing gets done. I won't stress if I get a little behind, but as long as it gets DONE then I will feel successful.

Part of the reason for this realization is because I made myself a little inspiration board.

The inspiration board, or vision board as others call it, also includes my health/fitness goals for the new year as well as home goals.

All things on the board are important in my life so it was only natural that half of the board was taken up by my creative/professional aspirations. They blend nicely.

Let's start with the art section.

My goals for my art within the year 2012:

1.) Show in more festivals and participate in an open studios tour.

I know of two festivals that I will be a part of. West End in Sand City and Dias de los Muertos in San Jose. I want to participate in at least two more. Perhaps Salinas Food and Wine again and maybe another DOD festival (perhaps Oakland?)

I actually just signed up for the Silicon Valley Open Studios Tour. Just in the nick of time too. I am very much excited about this. I get to show locally from my studio for an entire weekend.

It costs me a pretty penny to paticpate in these shows, and sometimes I don't break even, but in hindsight, that's okay. All I want is to expose my work to more possible future clientle.

Which leads to. . .

2.) Have more commissions! I have had two commissions in the past year and I would like to at least double that this year. So the goal is to have AT LEAST four commissions for 2012. If I get any more, I will be extremely happy.

I also love working on commissions. It's a challenge that I am all too ready to tackle. Each one different from the one before. It also keeps me motivated in my work. As inm 'hey! someone actually likes my work and wants their own! woot woot!'

I do the woot woot in my head of course.

3.) Show in at least ONE gallery. Last year I did not show in a single actual art gallery. My dream right now is to be able to show in MACLA (Movmiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana) in down town San Jose. I just got to fill out the submission guidline and hope they can show my work.

4.) Expand myself as an artist.

This one is a little tricky and explainable at the same time. I LOVE exploring differnet styles of painting and different mediums. What I want to do, generally depends on my mood and how I envision the piece of art. I want to keep expanding my work and not limit myself just to paint and canvas. But it does lead to hesitation because sometimes I can't decide whether to do a piece of work in acrylic or pastel and worry about how it feels and looks as I go through it, wondering if I made the right choice.

I really should stop stressing myself out by second guessing my first initial feeling.

Stevie Nicks you got that right. . .

Love Practical Magic BTW. :) I actually listen to the soundtrack wuite a bit when I paint. John Denver has been on my que as well.

5.) Go to more galleries and museums.

Inspiration abounds.

Onwards to the writing portions of my inspiration board!

Writing Goals for 2012

1.) Publish book.

I know I said it last year. . . . but THIS is the year. I feel it in my bones. Have you ever felt so strongly about something happening that it actually did? Well, I am feeling so strongly about this, that there is NO DOUBT in my mind the univerese will see my book published to great reviews.

1. b) find and agent or publisher. Currently looking into agents. I have gone through some of the books that I love to read myself, and looked into the author's agents. That's the best way I know how.

2.) Write more. blog more.

Yeah, I truly need to blog more entries. I hear the more frequent I blog the more traffic I may get. On both my sites.

This is my <strike>second</strike>, well, first real blog entry of the new year. I am a little behind schedule on this. Whoops.

3.) Write the two more books in the series on my story/novel. I have loads of stories lined up afterthe first book. It's smart to keep writing as you shop your book around. Better to have more than enough stories ready to hand over to the agent, than none at all.

4.) Go to a writing blogging convention. I have to look into this more. I know of the Willamette Valley Writers Con in August and I know of BlogHer 2012 in NY this year.

You know, just to get inspired ;)

I am also going to be building a professional website this year. I have been told by many people I need a website in league with my blog. Hence, market myself.

Another goal is "do not fear rejection". This above all, is a bigthing with me. I fear many things and rejection is pretty much second or third on the list.

Rejection not just from an agent or publisher or gallery house, but rejection in my life in general. Sure, rejection happens. I have been rejected by agents before. I cried. And I let it get me down. I let my self doubt rule.

Not this time.

Not any more.

Rejection can say hello, but I will kick it's but to the curb and fight on.

Do you have any goals for the New Year? What are some of those goals? How strongly do you feel about them?

Have you ever made an inspiration board?Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-58499419574007594852012-01-03T14:07:00.001-08:002012-01-03T14:07:39.358-08:00still herehey, just wanted to let everyone who may read this that I made it through 2011! I will be posting soon about my goals for 2012 and updates on my art and writing progress.

one of the goals: post more often!

It started off wonderfully with an early morning rise, double checking the list and heading out the door for last minute errands.

There probably will never be a day when I don't have to do something important for an art event last minute. :\ I work great under pressure though.

Errands included trip to the local Lowe's and then a stop over at Chavez Market. I picked up some pan de muerto for my altar and some other breads for the familia who came up to check out the event. I was going to grab an horchata for myself but fresh made carrot juice just called my name.

Further in the cemetery there were large altars on display and one of them was from my old alma mater Notre Dame San Jose. GoGremlins!! (you will always be a Gremlin to me).

The arts department got really creative this year and made an amazing altar.
Amazing feat. Wish we made the skulls back in my day in high school ;) but I did make a skeleton in ceramics class once. With wings. I have it somewhere at my parents house.

It was a beautiful day for the event. Last year it was windy, cloudy, and in the very last minutes it rained. And I tore a painting.

I noticed a small tear in one of my paintings this year after I put it up. Cset la vie.

I want to thank all of you who came out and enjoyed the festivities at the cemetery and those who support local artists and businesses. We can't do it without you. :)

I will be posting images of the work from the festival this week.

Hope you all have a Happy Halloween, Merry Samhain or however you celebrate and call it :D

I'm going to enjoy the evening with some pumpkin bread and beer. Then it's back to painting tomorrow!Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-45307366897144328972011-10-28T21:16:00.000-07:002011-10-28T21:16:25.628-07:00Dias de los Muertos event at Calvary CemeteryHola amigos!
And when there is craziness in my life, little accidents happen.

In example. I was painting at my desk, rotated the canvas and accidentally smacked myself in the lip. Blood was spilled.

I survived the wound and got back to work on painting. Whoops, I didn't mean to flip the camera off.

This past week, while at work, I had company managing my painting routine. My puppy Lando joined me for work since he could be trusted at home by himself. He destroyed and partially ate Elizabethan Collar #1. He tried working on Collar #2, but I kept an eye on him so he couldn't do much damage.

Don't worry, he wasn't in his kennel the entire time. He managed to run around the office causing usual puppy havoc and mischief.

I had also started on this painting.

And then decided to work on this one as well at the same time.

I have no sense of time management skills. :P

But each painting progressed very well. Even though two of my other paintings got put on hold. When I have an image in my head beating to come out, I have to oblige.

The two paintings that need work are the Parade and the Pinata Party. I lost my focus on them, becoming too overwhelmed by the volume of what I need to accomplish within the painting.

Whoops.

Friday I spent preparing for the Salinas Food and Wine Festival.I made new/more prints, contacting officials of the festival to ask questions for my family (there was a little confusion of the event was free or not. it was) loaded up my parents van with my new grates Hubby and his family gave to me as my birthday present (heavy!!) and made my way down to Salinas with my Mom who was going to help me at the Festival.

We stayed at mi Abuela's house.

She likes elephants :D

I woke up around 5:30 the day of the Festival and couldn't get back to sleep. I was quite nervous and excited at the same time. Like a child on the night before Christmas, waiting for Santa to appear. Well, instead of dreaming about eight tiny reindeer carrying a big guy in a red suit all I could think about was setting up my booth.

The e-mail I received about the event said we could start setting up after 8:30am. I was staring at the clock as if it would burst into flames while I waited for time to move swiftly.

After a bowl of cereal and have a glass of chilled Starbuck's Mocha (I hardly ever drink coffee) I was jittering in the passenger seat of my parents van and got to the site within 10 minutes. Though setting up wasn't as easy. There was a line of people in their cars and trucks waiting to find out just where their booths were to be set up!

No one at the entrance knew. Apparently there was only one sheet that revealed all? :\ Even amongst the confusion, people kept their cool and we all managed and finally got directed to spots. Pretty much where ever we got pointed to. Lol. I don't know if I was actually supposed be across the way from a Bratwurst vendor, fruit juice venodr and a cigar vendor, but it all worked out.

Mom and I got help unloading the van, and we began to set up. Eric and his brother Ty usually set up for me and Devon and I direct, but it was just my mom and I so I had to my big girl pants on and get a control on my bubbling freak out.

After only a minor glitch, we set up the booth wonderfully.

Ha! Just noticed Hubby peering through from behind the grate. He came just an hour after set up with Devon and Lando.

The day was HOT. For Salinas. It had to be in the 80s. For the first part of the day we had the sun hitting us directly, but as soon as noon came around we got the shade of the tree behind us, but it was still hot out in the sun.

I walked around once to check out the other vendors. I was eyeballing some very cute looking boots from across the way, but forgot to take a picture of them. I did however get a card.

I also watched a little part of two performances. One was this chica:

Isn't she cute? She wooed me in with Como la flor, by Selena. I very much enjoy Selena's music and this girl really hit the notes. Talented girl. Anyone know her name?

I LOVED her ranchero dress. I couldn't help but study the designs.

We also had a visitor in the booth. One of the ladies walking through the festival came by with her little basset hound Sugar. She was simply adorable. Much smaller than Addie, but just as sweet. She was so gentle and friendly.

You bet I will be painting her sweet face.

The other performance I saw was something near and dear to my heart. No, not the belly dancers. Wish, I could have watched them though because I really do enjoy belly dancing. I had to man my booth so I couldn't partake in all the festivities like the wine tasting, performance viewing or food tasting.

But I did catch a bit of these guys as they walked by my booth.

As you may have noticed from the above picture and my lack of blogging, I have been a busy little painter over here.

I have been working on new pieces for my Dias de los Muertos show at the Calvary Cemetery in San Jose. October 29 11 am to 3pm.

I'm excited, nervous and anxious all at the same time.

I have another show in Salinas at Hispanic Cultural Center in downtown Salinas, #34 Central Ave, Salinas CA, between the Steinbeck center and house. Just look for the crazy flags.

An open house with strawberry daquiris qill be happening on October 21st, in the evening. I will be showing some of my older paintings not seen at the art and wine festivals along with some of my newer paintings.

I am still debating whether or not to participate in the Salinas Art and Wine Festival on Oct 22. I would love to have more exposure, but I also think I can spend the day painting as well. I am a little torn between the two.

Below are photos of some work that is in progress and some of them are already finished, but I'm keeping them covered just a bit longer.

Sugar skull girl with marigolds. She's actually done and she looks fabulous. :D
Another unfinished working on at the moment painting. Looking to do something fun and happy from my childhood. Pinatas!!

I truly hope you enjoyed the small sneek peek.

Sometimes I don't know if I want to show the work in progress photos. The art just looks so . . . . blah. Empty. Disjointed. Unpolished. Unfinished.

Duh, Sonia. that's part of the whole work in progress aspect.

But I suppose it's a way of showing my work in a different light. Sure, it may look all funky now, but wait until you see the finished product attitude, I guess.Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-25592811776570794042011-08-28T09:56:00.000-07:002011-08-28T09:56:00.672-07:00West End!Hi everyone!

Hope you're all having a fun weekend! I am having a great time down here in Monterey County. I am here at the West End event in Sand City.

Yesterday was fun getting everything set up in the morning. I don't have a professional wire stand like many other of the vendors do, but I have some awesome helpers to figure out how to set up the wire grid I got at Orchard Supply Hardware.

Love OSH.
Long time no blog!

-crickets chirp-

Yeah, I know, I have completely dropped the ball on this whole blogging thing for the art and writing world. Let it be known that life gets in the way of the fun things.

Yes, I am talking about you work. And I don't mean artwork or writing. I don't consider it 'work' since I actually have fun doing it :)

Got to do whatever pays the bills and the insane credit card debt right?

Hopefully sometime soon I can make a living on my art and writing alone. I cross my fingers and pray. I also got to get myself more out there. Showcase my work. So here I am, back to blogging and restating the fact that I will just not go away.

I am an artist. I am a writer and I will succeed!! Hear my pen scribble and my paint brush! Rowr!

Yeah, I am a little excited.

Anyways, just wanted to let you know that I am alive and well (sans running injuries) and that I have actually been doing quite a bit of work and have two new shows coming up.

1.) August 26-27 the Sand City West End Event (just north of Monterey). An art and wine festival. I will be showcasing my animal portraits this year.

2.) October 29 will be the Day of the Dead Celebration at Calvary Cemetery in San Jose. Yes, it will be held in the parking lot to the cemetery. I will be showing Dios de los Muertos work, some which I am sketching now. Hope to be done in time!

Currently, I am a busy bee working on some new animal portraits.
I will also be working on the blog this week, adding images of my paintings, commision pricing and past and current exhibitions/shows.

Look at me Mom, I'm getting all professional here.

Hope you're all having a great day!Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-57874241709541717242011-05-06T10:39:00.000-07:002011-05-06T10:39:36.473-07:00Forget itSo I am sitting here trying, for the life of me, to remember my password for logging into the exhibitor profile for the San Mateo County Fair, and it's just not working.

I'm trying to submit last years Day of the Dead work to the special DOD portion of the Fair. Great opportunity to reach a broader crowd. If only I can log in!!

It's not even finidng my email address. Heck, it knows my name, but well...I don't know my password. Cset le vie.

Well, lookie here, long time no see. Yes, I fell by the wayside with blogging on my art and writing and well, to be quite honest, there hasn't been that much going on on either front. I have worked a little bit on my book and have been sketching quite a bit, and even yesterday I finally sat down and started a painting.

As for writing. I think I'm letting my fear of failure and disgust with myself and my work getting in the way of accomplishing my goals. It is VERY HARD not to compare myself to other writers already published and on their 3rd or 4th book. I read the books and wonder, why can't this be me? Why can't I finish my damn book? Why am I making excuses for this?

I was all gun hoe earlier this year, making it a New Year's resolution to finish it by the end of February. Remember that? Well, it's almost the middle of May and I have nothing to show for it except tears and self apathy. My eyes hurt like hell. Strained to the point of momentary blots of blindness.

I guess that's what I get for reading food and fitness blogs all day :)

I should quit while I'm ahead. Quit? Quit writing? Nah. Me? Never. Writing is in blood. I go nuts when I can't write something down whether it be a small quip, a tiny little twinkling of an idea or a complete novel bursting at the seems in my head.

Currently I've been listening to one of my favorite country classic singers, Marty Robbins and he sings beautiful stories. One follows a three part arch. One that I play over and over on my CD player and in my head and never gets old. It has me wanting to plan a trip to the badlands of New Mexico (yay!) and Texas (huh. who wudda thought?) The wild west and tragic love story has taken the place of vampires and angels.

Oooh or perhaps I can have vampires and angels in the badlands. ::furiously scribbles quick idea::

Eep. I have to set it aside to let my baby breathe and grow. I have to get to work on my story. If I don't finish, than my friend Aisling won't have anything to read while sipping on her glass of Dom Perignon.

I will finish thee oh novel. Even if I bust an eyeball or two to do it.Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-30493480928603587652011-03-31T15:27:00.000-07:002011-03-31T15:27:28.227-07:00Triumphant Returnokay maybe not so triumphant.

Still recovering from being sick. Coughing like a mad woman but even that is decreasing. I haven't touched a paintbrush in over a month and I haven't written anything pertaining to my novel in about the same time.

Creativity went to hibernation mode I guess.

But I am back. I am now more focused and determined than ever to get my goals done.

Last night at dinner, my girlfriend Aisling challenged me to finish my novel by June 1 or I have to buy her a bottle of Domn Perignon (sp?). I accepted her challenge and starting tomorrow, April 1st, I will be writing again.

Be prepared to hear more from me on the blog world. :-D Bwa ha ha ha ha.Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-1825997270387838992011-03-14T12:11:00.000-07:002011-03-14T12:11:51.940-07:00SickSorry for my total lack of posts recently. Work has kept me pretty busy from writing and such. I've also have been really sick the past few days.

Fever, chills, chest congestion, sore throat, aches etc. . .

There are several art things in the works right now. I haven't painted recently but some of my older work is going up in a show next week at the San Jose Rep.

I will post with more info since the keyboard is getting a wee biut dizzy.
. . . . or drown in the weather.

The Hubby and I are heading up to wine country this weekend. It had been planned for a while,as we soaked up the unusually warm winter weather, envisioning hiking in the sunshine and green hills and tasting wine out on the patios and verandas of our favorite wineries. Hello Ledson.

Fat chance of that.

It's dark, gloomy, and cold. All around perfect winter weather. At least the people heading to Tahoe mountains this weekend will be having a jolly good time on the fresh snow.

Did I mention it was freezing here in the Bay Area??We actually had snow. In Los Gatos. And not in the mountain part of the town. Yeesh.

Hopefully, luck and sun will shine upon us and give us a reprieve day so we can enjoy the sites.

I'm taking my camera with me and you can bet your behind that I'll be taking loads of pictures. An inquiry about a possible commission for landscape art has peaked my interest, and what better place to get some inspiration that the beauty that is wine country?

Perhaps potential buyers would like the gloom and drab of rain over a vineyard.

Maybe.

I'll be taking two books to read. One to finish and one I have been meaning to start since last April. Hahaha. I will also take my novel to write on if I find myself in my hotel room with nothing to do. . .

At least a glass of wine will help. Or two. :)

Stay warm and dry out there folks. And be careful on the roads.Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-89523222191402280542011-02-14T13:18:00.000-08:002011-02-14T13:21:35.781-08:00Writing Salon Recap

So Friday was the Writing Salon. Q & A Roundtable: The In’s and Out’s of Publishing Commercial Fiction with Nick Mamatas.

It was a fun learning experience with great lessons and insight on the publishing world.

Let me rewind with a detail about the afternoon. Coming from the South Bay, it's supposed to be a 45 -60 minute drive to Berkeley.

Well, with Friday night traffic it took me about 1.5 hours to get there.

The view of San Francisco from across the Bay.

Finally, I made it Berkeley and the site of the Writing Salon.

Yes, I giggled like a middle school boy from the 80s when I saw the street name.

There's a code to get in through that door. I didn't test it out yet. I was just glad I found the place.

I still had an hour and half to kill and I was hungry so I got lost and found my way to Pyramid Brew. After a quick dinner, sans a beer, I headed back to the site and opened the door to see this:

A dark, creepy, wooden stairwell that led to Goddess knows where.

I walked up those stairs and turned around on the landing to get the last glimmers of the sunset. If you look closely you can see dying embers of orange in between the buildings.

I then followed the wooden landing that had doors branching off them and found my room, which was the only open and inviting door.

So here I am.

I was early, the first one there and met with Nick, preparing the cheese for the evening. I told him I was a fan of cheese. While we waited for the others to show up, I began to feel a little jittery. I was getting nervous. I had no questions in mind, I had no idea what to expect and so far I had been the only one there.

Thankfully, the others came in soon after.

The session ended up only having three participants and Nick as our speaker. The two other students spoke about the work they were writing, which was crime and murder mystery. I felt a little ostracized by one when I said I was writing a science fiction fantasy. Luckily, Nick is a sci fi horror writer so it was equally spaced out on genres.

The session was open discussion where we talked about our interests, what we were writing and what were were looking for in this one night class. Nick opened it up to our questions and I immediately asked about the query letter.

The session reminded me of the one our workshops that I participated in at the Willamette Valley Writer's Convention, but this was far more one on one. We rehashed the importance of the query letter, the importance of an agent and looking into the small independent publishers, some of which he listed were local.

There was a large discussion on certain writer's and how they got published, or why they were even published, and how not to sound "insane" when writing and sending our letters to the agents. We also spoke about authors going under a different name, going into different genres, etc. when branching out into the industry.

I learned that I should go over my work to make sure it isn't written in cinematic style and to make sure my tenses are correct. I also found out that I shouldn't be too in love with my first work since that inevitably gets rejected and that even the titles that we envision with our book, well, we shouldn't get too attached.

Nick had us write the first paragraph of our query letter for practice and I found to have a difficult time trying to write it out in just a few short sentences. After pretty much vomiting the words onto my notebook, we took turns reading our "letters" and he helped us see what worked and what didn't. I still have a lot to work on to polish my letter but at least I know now what is more expected within the letter.

I took a lot of notes, about 4 pages worth, ate quite a bit of cheese and crackers and had some wine and tea. Overall, it was a much needed shot in the arm in terms of getting into the writing industry. I know I have quite a ways to go now, but I shouldn't fear it as much as I had been.

If there are any Bay Area readers out there interested in getting their creative juice flowing or just need the support of other writers, I do suggest the Salon. BUT I also suggest looking into writing groups that are close to you are that are free or less expensive as some of the salon class series.

Nick was very informative, answering our questions with great insight and humor. I'm not sure if it was his good nature or the wine that helped calm my nerves but I truly did enjoy the evening. For the one night 3 hour class priced at $45 dollars, I say it was worth the drive and the expense and if there were more classes like this I would definitely be interested.

For now, I'm going to take Nick's advice and look into writing groups more centrally located to where I live. Like my art studio where we feed off each others creativity and get inspired by one another, a writing group will be able to help me when I get stumped.

So, anyone know any writing groups in the South Bay? :)Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-59308237985603340672011-02-10T09:00:00.000-08:002011-02-10T09:00:01.149-08:00The Writer's SalonI'm excited folks.

Very excited.

I haven't mentioned it before but I am going to a workshop tomorrow night. And not just any workshop but a writer's workshop.

Happy dance!

Furthermore, it's just not any old 3 hour workshop, but one about publishing your book! Actually, it's more of a Q & A Roundtable where we ask this guy the secret handshake to get published but I'll take what I can freaking get!

According to the website, the Writing Salon : "Bring plenty of questions about agents, editors, submissions (or self-publishing), and commercial-versus-literary fiction to this free-form, wine & cheese get-together — and get answers from a working pro."

Eeeeeeee!

Okay Sonia, calm down, it's just a Q&A. A round table that could very much give me some fantastic insight on getting my book out there. I also don't want to get overly excited because I also don't want to be disappointed.

Granted this is different than going to Willamette's Writer's Convention in Oregon, meeting with several agents, getting only one rejection letter and nothing else from any of the others.

Stake through heart.

I need to go into this being prepared.

What kind of questions should I ask? Should I bring a sample of my work with me? Obviously, I need to bring a notebook (I am not on the iPAD, laptop bandwagon yet, though I truly do lust after one) but I need to be prepared as to what I need to know.

I could wait to see what others ask and a question of my own my arise from there's but I don't want to be lazy about this. Perhaps I should retrace my steps with the literary agents from WWC and see where I went wrong but other than that, I don't know what to ask.

Any suggestions? If there is any one out there, I would truly love to here from you now.Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-31919614431290370222011-02-09T10:58:00.000-08:002011-02-09T10:58:01.092-08:00Back in the studioThe past two weeks have been very busy for me at work. As explained in the previous post, work had me cleaning little parts from 8-4. It hurt. If it wasn't my bloodshot strained eyes that wrecked me (I really did look like Judge Doom), it was my sore wrists.

Holding a tiny pin .0070 wide, in one hand and holding a small part in the other really ached my wrists. Did the same Monday, ALL DAY, and they ended up hurting so bad I could barely hold a pencil let alone a paintbrush. Needless to say I did not make it to studio Monday night.

Generally, Mondays and Wednesdays are my studio days with a floating day somewhere within the week, though I am rethinking this I am training for a 10K and keeping up with my regular workout routine.

I was looking forward to working on this baby:

She's far from done and looking at her through the lens I did notice areas that I need to fix with her but that will be worked on on the next studio day. Tonight!

No way am I going to miss it due to any body pain. Shin splints? Bah! No stairs are going to keep me out of the studio. I have to stick to my goals if I want to ever see them completed, but I won't be too annoyed if I don't finish her anytime soon.

She's actually my work in progress in between projects at the studio. I have another one at my apartment when I work there i.e. if it's too cold in the studio. Which reminds me, I really got to get started on my set projects.

There are two in the Works. Well one, literally. I will let you know once I get more information about a possible show. . . that I have to write my theme for very soon. Eeep.

I'll take pictures of my studio tonight and post them soon.Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-83958381009728684882011-02-08T11:24:00.000-08:002011-02-08T11:43:19.727-08:00It's a basset's world.Sooooo . . . no post on Friday eh? My bad. Work and then mad dash south for a birthday surprise for my dear mother in law.

Would a picture of a basset hound in a party hat make up for it?

Do you recognize her? She's a frequent model in my work. . .

Part of the surprise :) Addie is my MIL's hound. Hubby, his brother, Addie and I surprised his mom at work with flowers, a balloon and all of us in hats including the shortround above. She managed to wear that hat for a good 15 minutes before she managed to snap it off with her back paw.

Here's another round of basset pictures. The painting below was done back in August. I wasn't too happy showing it at the Sand City street fair but I needed something to show my animal portrait work

In December, I wanted to fix it up before having it possibly show at the Axis Gallery. Here is the new and FINISHED version below.

It wasn't picked to be in the show, but I was overall thrilled with the outcome of the painting. Looks so much better to me and more in the direction I want to go with my animal portraits I think. Far more detail, texture and depth. Not as flat.

Her eyes pop a little more in the first version than in the second, but there seems to be more life to her in the second.

Hmmm.

What do you think of the changes?

Hubby's mom now has this hanging in her house among her other basset artwork collection. She has four dog drawings from me on her wall, three of which are of Addie.

I really got to start on some more animal portraits to build up my collection to show perspective clients. Can't just all be basset hounds.

I apologize.

Work was very very busy which involved a lot of deliveries, running around, office work and cleaning of parts with holes small than the size of a pin head. I literally had my eyes focused so much on these damn tiny things that they got sore, red, and I looked cracked out of my mind.

It hurt.

And I am still pretty busy here at work but I did manage to start working on my fitness, food, culture blog. I am going to design a new header for it this weekend and get my lists going so I can write upcoming posts for both that one and this one.

I just wanted to let you know that I am working on my goals. I'm writing when I can i.e before yoga, at stop lights, in bed etc., started outlining the second novel after the current one I am working on, and even made it to the studio twice the past two weeks. I worked on one of my "in between" paintings, a piece of work that I do between projects, and it started to form a lot better last night, though the chill of the studio made me leave around 8.

I've got more lists going and I promise to you there will be more posts from me. Look for a longer post on Friday. :)

Thanks for hanging in there with me.Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7308337207586529014.post-8185715738330746952011-01-21T12:23:00.000-08:002011-01-21T12:23:30.961-08:00Ok, new blog not going to debut until next Monday. I need to do some more research as to whether I would want it on wordpress or blogspot and I need to get prepared for it.
I am making lists.

Lots of lists. I'm a listaholic and most of my lists disappear in the clutter of lists and papers. If you would look in my purse there would be more papers of lists.

And I would show you my crazy assortment of lists if the darn picture uploader would work . . . .

Which it's not so it's going to disrupt my topic of discussion---oh wait, got it working.

Well, I pretty much finished this post with out the pictures and went into a whole different area that I wanted to touch upon so I will leave this post up and then do the actual post I wanted to do today next week.

Still with me?

So. Lists.

I make lists to remember things that I need to do, things that I want to do, and things I so need to avoid doing again in the future. And of course there are my food lists, my art supply lists, my lists for writing my weekly schedule which hardly ever goes according to plan, except for one week which was an anomaly in itself.

Last night, hubby and I were sitting on the couch and I had a sudden thought, pertaining to the story line of the novel I am currently writing, hit me. I had my pad of paper--

(I have thousands of pads of paper and post its because I may need to write things down at any given moment, so our apartment, my car and my desk is littered with paper [not very green of me, I know, I will try to be better] and one year Eric gave me a HUGE stack of post its for Christmas. They didn't survive half the following year. And for my bridal shower, my friend Maria gave us a huge stack of various size notepaper, which I use everyday....and I am getting away from my orginal story as I usually do....eeep!)

--but had no pen to write my thoughts down so I asked my Eric to give me a pen from the table next to him. Shocking. I generally wear pens, pencils, paintbrushes and other seemingly sharp and dangerous objects in my hair because it's easily accessible (don't look at me like that I know some of you do it to) which drives my husband nuts because there hardly goes a week when he doesn't get stabbed by something in my hair. I think that's why he generally likes my hair down. I can't conceal any weapons in it if it's down. Huh. I'm like Marge Simpson. haha.

Anyways, back to the story.

I asked for the pen, he teased me a little with the pen. I was like a cat trying to snatch a laser light out of the air.

*not my cat

Finally he relented and I got to write down my notes. Which was promptly added to the pile of papers tucked into my purse. Thankfully I managed to find it from the blackhole that is my handbag and am trying to squeeze in some more novel writing in between actual money making work.

Which has been going pretty well this week. I managed to finish a chapter and am veering in a slightly different direction than which I started, oh, about over ten freaking years ago!

Yes, I've been working on these characters and this basic story for over ten years. I'm a brat, I know. But I think I finally found the format that I would like to present it in. And, it seems to be going well, even though the other day I sat down and read some pages from a book that held the original writing format that I had used when I first wrote the story.

Enter the internal battle that constantly rages. Part of me was like, 'look! why didn't you just stick with it that way! it's working out just fine for them!' and the other part says 'you're almost done writing it in the new style, why try to change it, AGAIN?'

I'll finish writing it. I'll send it to someone who gives a damn and see what they say.

Anyways, I must be off. Lunch is waiting and my characters are calling for me.

Hot tea. Yay!

The New Year's Goals entry that you have been waiting with baited breath for. :) Could you hardly stand the wait?

Neither could I.

Maybe some of you passed out already.

Well, let me divulge to you my goals for 2011. Some of them are to make dreams come true. Mine, of course, and helping do the same for others. Others are going to be done in a different spectrum.

Since this is my writing and painting blog, I'm going to do my best to keep my entries in the general area of my works and others to highlight along the way this year. I feel that if I publicly declare these goals, then it will force me to stand by them and complete them to the best of my abilities.

They will get done.

Goal #1: Finish writing story and star on the others!

Okay, this is a long time coming. I've put it off. I lost the way. I fought my way through dark times and forgot about in happy times. And other moments, I simply did not have the time to work.

But those are all bullshit excuses.

You have to make time to get things done. Whether it be canceling on a few movie nights or cutting your workouts short or even locking yourself in your office hiding from your husband and cats, it will get done. You meaning me. I'm talking to myself here as much as I am talking to you, dear readers.

The original grand plan when I was scheming this up late last 2010, was to complete the book by the end of January. Seeing how I had to steal a horse and race to catch up and jump back on the wagon within this past 2 weeks of the month alone, the goal is now to finish it by the end of February.

I will also start working on the other stories to follow the first book. At least one more book written before the end of 2011.

Which hopefully will lead into . . . .

Goal #2: Get my book published this year.

Pretty much self explanatory.

This goal has been my dream since I could pick up a pencil and write down the crazy things I saw, and not just in my head, to tell a story. This will be the year it gets done. It has to be.

Goal #3: Create a professional website.

Again, self explanatory. This is a very important goal because if I want to make it as an artist, in this day and age, I need a web page. I need a site that will tell the prices for commissioned pieces like animal portraits. It will show people around the world what I do. It will give a place to any future fan of my books or art to come and just get more info on whatever piece or story they like.

A website is important. Plain and simple.

As they said in the movie, A Field of Dreams (goddess I love that movie), "If you build it, they will come." Actually, the move said he will come, but America heard they, yet I digress.

Goal #5: Participate in more art shows.

Do you really need an explanation on this one? No? Well, I'll give one to you anyways.

I am honestly quite thankful for all the help my friends and family have given me in getting into art shows.
I never would have put so much effort or even remotely started to believe in myself and my work if it wasn't for their help and support.

To honor them, I would like to get into at least two shows all on my very own. That I seek them out on my own. That I contact people on my own.

I think it will be good for me. Instead of waiting for something to fall into my lap or fall ass backwards into a show, I have to make the initiative and look for shows I can participate it.

But if any one just so happens to tell me about a show I can work in, well, I surely am not going to turn it down. :) And of course I will do the same for them. As artists and friends, we have to help each other succeed. That's all that we really can do.

Goal #6: At least one show in a gallery in a big city in CA.

I had two separate goals, one to show in San Francisco and the other to show in other local cities in CA. If I could go national, that would be bad ass. International and I would die happy. But I am getting head of myself.

The main goal is to show in an actual gallery in SF, SJ, LA, SD, Sac City etc.

Just before I graduated from UCSD in 2006, I had several works shown at a small gallery off the beaten path in down town San Diego. Granted, I had been selected amongst other extremely talented graduating students to show and we had a great show called ...SHIFT.

I want to do that again.

Goal #7: Read more.

There was a time I would go through 2-4 books a month. Small, large, thick, thin, hardcover (get your mind out of the gutter people) and paperback.

I would read read read until the cows came home, and since we don't have cows, I read a lot for long periods of time. I would go to bed and pass out while reading. Granted, that is not a goal of mine to do now, but I need to read more.

If not only to get my creative juice flowing, but to just escape from the everyday world. We need the occasional, sane, escape.

And it's not just going to be my vampire, witches, sci fi fantasy novels that I love, but also other books that will help enlighten me, educate me, help me grow as a person. Not including cookbooks but not limitied to books, but blogs as well, blogs pertaining to furthering the growth of my mind and soul.

I want to continue learning about my heritage. A book is good for learning about Aztec and Native American myths and legends. I need to learn how to get into the art and writing worlds. Books can teach you that and offer some advice.

My aunt had a lot of books about the subject, and after she passed away, my mother gave me some of those books. I've been too afraid and ashamed to open them. But not anymore. Time to read.

And read I will.

Goal #8: More blog entries.

Yes, folks, you heard it first, right here, well technically second since I voiced this goal to my husband last weekend on the couch.

Anyways, look forward to seeing more entries of writing and art, at least 2 times a week. Goal is to make it up the 3 and depending how burnt out I get on all the writing and painting and blogging... we'll see if I will crank it up any more. :)

But there will be more blog entries coming up soon, but in regards to this one. Very soon, another blog will burst forth from my head like Athena and pop up in the web already choked with thousands of blogs about food, fitness and healthy living.

So yes, I am a sheep following the mass of people wanting to document their lifestyle change and their quest for peace with their bodies while offering up scrumptious and possibly disastrous attempts at recipes to readers, making them hunger for more or be terrified to turn on their stove tops.

Look forward to an entry about the new blog and the address as soon as I create it.

Well, that seems to be it for the goals of 2011 for writing and art.

I have a whole list of ideas of what I want to write for this blog as well as my new one (coming soon!!). So check back this week, because if there isn't a new blog posted, then I'd already be failing at goal #8.

I promised to list my new year's goals this week.

It has yet to happen. Disappointing, I know. I apologize. Thus far I am barely squeaking by with one of the goals, well, maybe two. We'll see how it goes into the weekend.

Anyways, I do promise you, dear readers, if I do have any, that there will be a post on Monday about the new year's goals. Starting the third week. Insane, isn't it? Almost 3 weeks into 2011. Time sure flies when you need it to slow down and drags on beyond belief when you want it to speed up.

I swear the clock was ticking backwards the other day, but that just have been due to the giant icky spider that I found in it.

But the good news for the lack goal posting is because I've been busy at work and I've also been busy writing. Granted it's only two new pages, but the creative juices are stirring not only for writing and art but for some other possible projects as well and it's been fun trying to get them all onto paper and computer. Frustrating at times, but fun.

I will get into those the next post.

Let's just say, I believe this year will be a big year for me.

A girl can dream.

Until Monday peeps!Sonia Orban-Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15201777855002245177noreply@blogger.com0
